R1 CAGNES-SUR-MER [L-H]
C1 – PRIX DE LA COTE D’AZUR – ICI AZUR – 2900m (a2m) – Gr3 – Harness – EUR € 120,000
- GERICAULT – Won 3 of last 4, most recently a Bordeaux Class A late last month. Is not a priority but in present form is east to like for a minor place cheque
- IRON MESLOIS – Has 2 runs under his felt following a year-long absence. Presents solid Cagnes credentials, has been reconfigured, and must not be overlooked
- KAPTAIN DU LIAMONE – Fine crusader that placed twice at this level last month. Has no Cagnes references but has demonstrated fine versatility and looks a serious player
- HARRY LE BEAU – Takes a notable leap in category after a respectable but unthreatening course-and-distance performance on 27 December and can be passed over
- IMPERATOR D’ELA – Clearly back in business following a difficult stretch last season. Faces a tougher bunch this time but starts in front and is unlikely to disappoint. First 5
- GREGOR – Has yet to win in France since moving stables. Is confirmed here, and starts in front, but still not a player
- GIVE ME – Unexceptional for the most part, and latterly 6th in a Class B here, but in this company will have little to offer
- FREE TIME JEPSON – Serious type with nothing to prove at this level of competition. Will have come on for his re-entry run and from the front row can make this his own
- COLBERT WF – Eliminated in 2 of last 3 but has otherwise been in fine shape. Should take well to Cagnes conditions and on good behaviour can play a leading role
- CHARMY CHARLY AS – Takes a break from Vincennes after running valiant 5th in a 2100m Class B on 13 December. Takes on a better lot this time but can figure prominently if Gabriele Gelormini keeps him focused
- HEROS DES MOTTES – Has done nothing of note since imposing here last July. Shoes fitted and not a concern
- GALA DE CRENNES – 5th in a Gr.3 under these conditions on 20 December but runs shod this time and is not about to repeat
- GIBUS – Got back in the game when 2nd in a 2150m Class A here on 13 December, but races shod on this occasion and can be ruled out
- KSAR – Preparing for this when unplaced in a Vincennes Class A on Sunday. Is well-regarded at home, will be barefoot for the occasion, but the handicap will do him no favours
- FLOREAL – Useful on a good day and winner of this race in 2024, but is a shadow of his former self and unlikely to make any waves
- HARLEY GEMA – Won 2 in a row, including a Mauquenchy Gr.3, before failing to deliver in GNT Final in late-November. Breaks from back line but has already won here and should not be far off the mark
Summary: A high-calibre element that lost his action early in the Criterium Continental, FREE TIME JEPSON (8) takes on a less-elevated bunch this time and, reconfigured for his Cagnes debut, will be difficult to oppose if applied. Alessandro Gocciadoro will still want to be wary of the in-form and barefoot KAPTAIN DU LIAMONE (3) who just missed out in Paris last month, and the delicate but capable COLBERT WF (9) who would have finished close recently had he kept his action together. CHARMY CHARLY AS (10) is hard to knock on an even surface and should not be far from the action, and neither should IMPERATOR D’ELA (5) who steps up in category with a decent hand to play.
SELECTIONS
FREE TIME JEPSON (8) – KAPTAIN DU LIAMONE (3) – COLBERT WF (9) – CHARMY CHARLY AS (10)
C2 – PRIX PIERRE BOCQUET – 2925m (a2m) – Class B – Harness – EUR € 33,000 - MANHATTAN ROUSSAC – Moderate type backing up after finishing last of 6 in a Class B here on Monday, but already looks out of his depth
- MAESTRIA GALAA – Unexceptional sort that was eliminated in 20 December race of reference and will struggle to make her presence felt
- MAASAI – Picked up in the autumn where he left off last May, most recently missing out by a small margin in a Class A over track and trip on 20 December. Is plainly close to his race and must be considered a leading contender
- MAITRE D’HOULBEC – Occasionally a handful but ran decent 4th in 20 December race of reference. Is better than that though and, with shoes off for the first time, is unlikely to let the side down
- MISTRAL LOMIG – Handy individual that ran 5th behind MAASAI (3) in a Class A over course and distance on 20 December. Races barefoot, with Eric Raffin reining for the first time, but still looks a first-5 chance at best
- MOZART DU DOLLAR – Opened his winter account over the Vincennes short course prior to missing out by little in a Class B over the main track on 11 December, and will not be available at 34-1 this time. Claim
- MARILYN MONROE – Useful filly that was quickly eliminated in race of reference. Will be up against the boys again but can play a small part if Louis Goetz gets her off on the right foot
- MISTER BARRA – Reliably-performant element that ran 3rd, a place behind MAASAI (3), in a Class A over course and distance on 20 December. Enjoys a good entry and Anthony Muidebled is unlikely to let this opportunity pass him by
Summary: An honest servant that has been holding his own in Paris recently, MOZART DU DOLLAR (6) was beaten only by a very good horse early last month, sports pads for the first time, and can wrap this up. He can still expect to meet resistance from a barefoot MAASAI (3) who has been a model of consistency since his successful debut. Another dependable sort, MISTER BARRA (8) finished a place behind him here last month, goes barefoot for the first time, and has a decent chance of making the frame once again.
SELECTIONS
MOZART DU DOLLAR (6) – MAASAI (3) – MISTER BARRA (8) – MAITRE D’HOULBEC (4)
C3 – PRIX JUNIOR DU RIB – 2925m (a2m) – Class G Amateur Drivers – Harness – EUR € 8,000 - KEOPS JUTH – Has finished just 1 of 6 starts since returning in the autumn and makes his amateur bow with no chance of shaking things up
- INCROYABLE KYRN – Showed improvement a month back when 2nd in a Salon-de-Provence amateurs Class G. Tends to go well for Britt Grift and from the front row can give this a good go
- ICK DU VIVIER – Has been very hard to knock over recent months, most recently close 2nd in a Nantes amateurs Class G on 1 December. Comes here refreshed and is well-placed to open his Cagnes account at the first time of asking
- JARDY DU CYD – Ran 3rd in a Marseille-Vivaux amateurs event in early-November. Has twice failed to deliver in better company since, and is shod this time, but will have his supporters
- KINGDOM DU LIAMONE – Has been particularly disappointing in the professional ranks for some time. Is new to the amateur category, and starts in front, but others still preferred
- JERONIMO – Back under harness after finishing a distant last of 5 in a monte Class E here last week, and can be written off
- JESSAMINA – Unexceptional mare that has not been seen out since last June and is going to need the race
- HEAVEN JIEL – Has evident ability but has been below-par over recent months and sports 4 pads this time. No threat
- KOOL LUDOIS – Complicated but capable type associated with Kassandra Fresneau for the first time and takes his first amateur steps with a realistic chance of finishing in the money
- KERNEL DE NUIT – Takes first steps in the amateur category after failing to deliver in a Class D here late last month, but is better than most here and has the wherewithal to win a race of this nature
- JEAN MAJYC – Has struggled somewhat since returning to the mainland, but reassured before being eliminated here on 20 December, and should not be overlooked
- JANE LUIS PORSGUEN – Not always the most dependable but boasts decent amateur references all the same. Enjoys a good entry though and could well contest a place in the frame
- ILOUMAX – 5th in a similar event over 2150m here last month before taking on too much last Friday, but back in the amateur category looks competitive for a place on the podium
Summary: Very good at this level, currently in fine form, and making his debut for the Jean Uroz yard, ICK DU VIVIER (3) has been reconfigured for the occasion and from the front row can get straight down to business. That being said, KERNEL DE NUIT (10) finds himself in less-elevated company and despite the penalty still looks the main threat. JANE LUIS PORSGUEN (12) may not be the easiest of horses to gauge but she has form at this level and, with her mind on the game, can play a prominent part. Close to the earnings threshold, ILOUMAX (13) must be taken seriously.
SELECTIONS
ICK DU VIVIER (3) – KERNEL DE NUIT (10) – JANE LUIS PORSGUEN (12) – ILOUMAX (13)
C4 – PRIX HULK DE GODISSON – 2925m (a2m) – Class D – Mounted – EUR € 38,000 - ENAOZ – Eliminated on recent monte debut despite showing his form. Starts in front, with Benjamin Rochard aboard this time, and can finish close as long as he keeps his action together
- JEEK D’ACADIE – Reassuring 3rd in a harness Class E over course and distance last week, but is here for reasons of conditioning and can be passed over
- LYRIKO BELLO – Lone 5yo in the line-up and boasts excellent Cagnes credentials in the other code. Oscar Placier aboard for monte debut and is unlikely to disappoint. Chance
- JOY FOR US – Honest mare that left a fine impression on re-entry at Pontchateau on 21 December. Eliminated on sole Cagnes start but in current condition is unlikely to be far off the mark
- I LOVE D’AMOUR – Has not put a foot wrong under the saddle since May 2024. Will have come on for excellent return run and debuts at the venue with every expectation of doing battle with KOOL DES CHAMPS (7)
- IVANA DE BERTRANGE – Has done nothing noteworthy in either code since August last year. Sports 4 pads this time but still not a concern
- KOOL DES CHAMPS – Takes first competitive monte steps after taking on too much at Vincennes last month. Has a lot going for him here and can get straight down to business
- ICARE DE PHYT’S – Drops back in category, and switches code, after some particularly modest harness efforts. Is nothing special in the ridden code and is unlikely to cause an upset
Summary: Capable at this level under harness, KOOL DES CHAMPS (7) drops back in category for his monte debut, sports a fresh configuration, and with Eric Raffin in the saddle can impose at the first time of asking. He will still be keeping an eye on I LOVE D’AMOUR (5) who left quite the impression on re-entry 3 weeks ago, and LYRIKO BELLO (3) whose ridden bow has been much-anticipated.
SELECTIONS
KOOL DES CHAMPS (7) – I LOVE D’AMOUR (5) – LYRIKO BELLO (3) – ENAOZ (1)
C5 – PRIX FREDERIC PASSY – 2925m (a2m) – Class D – Harness – EUR € 38,000 - ICARE DES CHAMPS – Modest trotter that has not made his presence felt for some time and is not about to change his ways
- DISTILLATO – Decently-performant element with a race under his belt following the autumn break, but at this level will have too much to do
- COSMEA – Won 3 straight in Germany before leaving a good impression over a mile in Jagersro in late-November. Comes here fresh and with Eric Raffin reining will not go down easily
- ELDORADO JET – Takes first steps on French soil following some recent underwhelming performances. Should appreciate the Cagnes profile though and the front-row start will only work in his favour. First 5
- JALAPENO – Mixes the good with the less-good but has decent Cagnes form. Goes barefoot for first time since September 2023 and cannot be ruled out
- JOKE DE CHENU – Unexceptional mare with better prospects in the monte division and can expect to have few, if any, friends
- LUTIN VENESI – Made up for late-November run when 3rd in a Vincennes Class B on 14 December. Excels with David Bekaert and can again challenge for the win
- FORTUNADRAGO FONT – Useful Italian raider making French debut after placing over a mile in Turin early last month. Takes on a better lot here however and, even though first-time barefoot, still looks no more than a minor place prospect
- LARGO DE CASTELLE – Gave a fine account on Cagnes debut, running 4th in a Class C under these conditions on 27 December. Incurs the handicap but still looks dangerous
- FINGER DES BORDES – Unexceptional veteran that has been making little impact here lately. Races padded this time and from the 2nd row is unlikely to spring any surprises
- JAVANAISE TURGOT – Endured a difficult trip here late last month when plainly full of running. Has references at a superior level and with application can wrap this up
- FAMEUX SAX – Capable individual with just the one race in him since the layoff. Will be shod for the occasion and best to keep one’s powder dry
- HAIDA SAUTONNE – Takes a dip in category after giving a fine account on comeback in a Vincennes Class C 3 weeks ago. Will have come on for the run and debuts at the venue with a decent hand to play
- ASTRONASCENTE ZAC – Takes on a less-exalted lot after finishing unplaced in a Gr.3 here on 20 December. Trainer could not have wished for a better entry and looks competitive for a place in the frame
Summary: Very hard to fault at Cagnes-sur-Mer, JAVANAISE TURGOT (11) was not the most fortunate here late last month, but drops back down the class-ladder and even from the 2nd row can set the record straight. She will be opposed though by the reinvigorated LUTIN VENESI (7) who is 25m better off, and LARGO DE CASTELLE (9) who put on a good showing in a Class C here just under a fortnight ago. Back at a more reasonable level, ASTRONASCENTE ZAC (14) benefits from a terrific entry here and Kristof Depuydt will be eager to make hay.
SELECTIONS

C6 – PRIX METEOR II – 2925m (a2m) – Class E – Harness – EUR € 26,000 - JACOVIA MADRIK – 6th to JELGA DU VIVIER (11) in 30 December race of reference. Would be preferred in a lesser category
- JOY FOR EVER – Has not put a foot out of line since returning from her autumn break, most recently 2nd to JELGA DU VIVIER (11) in a Class E over course and distance on 30 December, and is unlikely to be far off the mark
- JAIKA DES FANES – Serious mare presenting fine credentials under these conditions. Will be fully-fit by now and can contest a spot on the podium
- KIRA BO FACE – Not the easiest of horses to handle but has form at this level, and at the venue, and must not be underestimated
- KATIA DHELPA – Gave a fine account on comeback over track and trip on 13 December, running 3rd in a Class D. Faces a less difficult task this time, will have come on for the race, and will be well-supported to win this
- KLASSE DE BRUZEAU – Considerably better than her 6th place behind KATIA DHELPA (5) in a Class D under these conditions on 13 December would imply, and will be expected to play a more active role this time
- INES D’ATOUT – Disappointing on the whole for some time. Has never failed to deliver here, but in this company has no realistic chance
- KANGALA DE FAEL – Takes a dip in category after running 7th in a Class C over track and trip 12 days ago. Has imposed just the once here and is unlikely to this time either, but still looks competitive for a place in the mix
- JOUVENCE SECRETE – Has struggled with stride woes since returning to competition. Seldom disappoints here otherwise but recent results do little to inspire confidence
- JOLIE SMART – Capable mare that has been delivering in the amateur division here recently, however at this level will have her work cut out
- JELGA DU VIVIER – Made no bones about winning a Class E under these conditions on 30 December. Takes on a better lot this time but still looks the pick of the field
- JEALOUS GIRL – Surprisingly lacklustre last of 11 in a 2150m Class D here last month. Sports 4 pads for the first time and is unlikely to spice things up
- JOLYSTAR GEDE – Capable on a good day but eliminated in last 7 and can be confidently disregarded
- JAVA D’ECAJEUL – Fine mare in the monte discipline. Is here for a chance of scenery and is unlikely to influence the outcome
- ISEA DU QUENNE – Moderate mare returning to racing with 4 pads after prepping modestly for this at Marseille-Vivaux in early-December, and is not about to create an upset
Summary: Tough and consistently performant in her category, JELGA DU VIVIER (11) made short work of her first barefoot start, winning comfortably over course and distance in late-December, and a similar performance would see her double up. JOY FOR EVER (2) ran 2nd to her that day and should again figure prominently, but may first have to see off KATIA DHELPA (5) who has a decent chance against older horses here, and the Cagnes-loving JAIKA DES FANES (3) who has 2 races under her belt.
SELECTIONS

C7 – PRIX PROMISING CATCH – 2150m (a1m1/4) – Class E – Harness – EUR € 22,000 - L’ANGE AIMEF – Showed significant ability last winter when barefoot. Should be at peak fitness by now and, with application, can bring home the bacon
- LINO GUILLERVILLE – Serious sort that left a good impression at Vincennes on 9 December. Should take well to Cagnes conditions and must be considered a player
- LOOK HAPPY – Missed out by the smallest of margins in a 2175m Vincennes Class E on 11 December. Is marginally behind in earnings and looks dangerous on Cagnes bow. Chance
- LOVE YOU PHYT’S – Capable sort being sent to Cagnes after struggling over Vincennes main track. Returns to racing barefoot and, over this more even surface, is not one to be underestimated
- L’HEBUS – Sent for a break after winning easily at Borely in mid-October. Eliminated on re-entry though and others easier to back
- LEADER DES APRES – Put away after winning at Marseille-Borely in August. Should be fit by now and is plainly in competition-mode. Place chance
- LUCIFER – Unplaced when preparing for this over 2925m here 3 weeks ago. Is barefoot on this occasion and although not a priority, is still good enough to challenge for a first-5 payout
- LINAS – Surprised somewhat when 2nd of 9 in a Montauban Class E on 28 December, however has little chance in this company
- LEPTON – Useful but capricious. Eliminated in last 4 starts and even racing barefoot will have few friends
- LIVE ON – Steps up in category after coming 5th of 8 finishers in a 2925m Class F here last week. Gabriele Gelormini reining this time but still not an obvious choice
- LAOS DE BANVILLE – Opened Cagnes account last winter when barefoot. Has 4 conditioners under his belt since the break, but others still preferred
Summary: Winner of 2 here last winter, L’ANGE AIMEF (1) has 3 conditioners under his belt, will be barefoot as he was then, and takes to 2150m for the first time and with every chance of getting his nose in front. Christophe Martens will still be mindful of the in-form LOOK HAPPY (3) who is ideally-positioned in front, and LINO GUILLERVILLE (2) who consistently acquits himself competitively. After a pair of re-entry runs LEADER DES APRES (6) will be barefoot for the first time since imposing at Borely in the summer and must be respected.
SELECTIONS
L’ANGE AIMEF (1) – LOOK HAPPY (3) – LINO GUILLERVILLE (2) – LEADER DES APRES (6)
C8 – PRIX KAIZER SOZE – 2700m (a1m1/2) – Class E – Harness – EUR € 33,000 - HERBU DU FERRON – Not the most reliable horse in the field but sports front pads for the first time this winter and could just get a look in
- LORENZO BOKO – Capable Scandinavian element making first appearance for new stable. Has not been seen out since October but is barefoot for the occasion, and the draw will only work to his advantage. First 5
- JAURESS DE CANI – 3rd of 10 in a 2925m Class C here on 18 December, his first target of the winter. Benefits from an excellent spot in front and can bring the fight to INSOLENT SOMOLLI (8)
- HARING OKINA – Delicate individual but has a particular liking for Cagnes-sur-Mer. Has just the one race under his belt since the break, but enjoys a decent draw and with application could pleasantly surprise
- JUNGLE GREEN – Returns to the professional ranks after running 4th in a Vincennes amateurs Class E on Christmas Eve. Is new to the venue but is as adaptable as they come and from the 5-spot should figure prominently
- HURRICANE FRANCE – Pleasantly surprising 4th in a 2150m Class E here 3 weeks ago. Starts in front but a repeat nevertheless seems improbable
- EVEN STEVEN – Unexceptional nordic import that will need to show more than he did in Bordeaux last month and can be ruled out
- INSOLENT SOMOLLI – Had been on a fine run of form before finishing 5th, a place behind HURRICANE FRANCE (6), in a 2150m Class E here 3 weeks ago, but with more luck in running can bounce back and impose
- REDBULL PELLINI – Has not been seen out since coming surprise 3rd of 18 in a 2725m Class F at Grenade-sur-Garonne on 25 October. Is barefoot this time but still not an obvious choice
- BALDUR – Makes Cagnes debut after imposing over 2000m in Florence on 16 December, but is being aimed too high this time and the draw does him no favours
- HAFFIENOU – Has been totally off the boil since July 2024 and can be confidently ignored
- JACK DU BARBEY – 3rd to JORLANDO (13) in a 2150m Class F here on 27 December. Steps up in category but has a particular liking for Cagnes conditions and will be no pushover if David Bekaert positions him early
- JORLANDO – Comfortable winner of 2150m Class F here 12 days ago. Not ideally-drawn but form is not in question and Leo Abrivard has already won with him. Chance
Summary: Even better since moving to the Jean-Marie Robaud stable, INSOLENT SOMOLLI (8) was forced to run nose to the wind here last month but has been reconfigured and, despite a wide draw, can still make a big splash. JAURESS DE CANI (3) did everything asked of him here the same day and the better draw will only enhance his prospects. Although allocated a tough number, JORLANDO (13) has thrived since moving to Cagnes and Leo Abrivard can be confident of another big run. Twice a winner here last summer, JACK DU BARBEY (12) ran 3rd to him recently, and also starts on the back row, but still looks competitively well in.

Summary: A very competitive opening event. LUCIOLA DE LOU (10) is very consistent and looks fit and ready for a winning turn. LATINO BOY (1) probably has the best form in the race but is returning from a break, so his fitness will need to be taken on trust. MAG DES CHALIERS (2) showed he has some ability when scoring at Saint-Brieuc but is returning from a short break. MARBELLA SMART (6) is better than her last run suggests, and her penultimate start was a good performance, so she must be respected. MALICE DU GERS (5) has some faults behind her, including last time out when she was ready to finish in the places. She will be a danger if staying in stride this time. MADISON DANICA (8) can also follow up on a good last win.
