Voynichese earns Group 1 start with tough win

Voynichese made the quantum leap from an Albury maiden win to a stakes success in the Listed $160,000 The Show A Heart (1500m) look routine, stamping herself as a two-year-old filly with above average ability.
“We’ve had a big opinion of this filly for a while now,” Olive said. “She’s only small but she’s very progressive.
“Credit to her owners, they told me to bring her up here and it’s worked out well.
“She got a beautiful run and a great ride today, which she hasn’t had in her previous two starts.
“I’m really looking forward to getting her over further, because she finished ff really well. ”
Voynichese ($17) finished strongly under Declan Bates to score by a widening one-and-a-quarter lengths from Glenorchy ($2.45 favourite) with West Coast ($5) nearly a length away third.
Bates, best known as the regular rider of crowd-pleaser Pride Of Jenni, has joined the growing Voynichese’s fan club.
“Voynichese’s only a little filly to look at, but she doesn’t feel little when you’re riding her,” Bates said.
“She really lengthens nicely, has a beautiful stride on her and she was far superior today.”
Bates said Voynichese was “on and off the bridle a little throughout, so I gave her a little squeeze at the 500 metre mark”.
“She quickened much better than I was expecting,” Bates said.
“We probably got to the front too soon because she had a little look around, so it was just a matter of keeping her mind on the job to the line.
“But the race was effectively over at the top of the straight and hopefully I keep the ride for the J J Atkins if she heads that way.”
Voynichese, a daughter of former English juvenile sensation, cost only $30,000 as a yearling and is very clearly named.
“I think it’s an ancient code that never got solved,” Olive said when asked the meaning of the filly’s name. “Her dam is Great Mystery so that’s where it came from.
“If she pulls up well from today we’ll definitely think about backing her up in the J J Atkins next Saturday. She’s paid up so we’ll probably give her a crack at it.”
