A quick back-up into one of the signature two-year-old events of the Brisbane winter carnival is on the table for emerging filly I Am Dirty if she can make it two wins in succession in the Bill Carter Stakes at Doomben today.
After enduring a wide run when unplaced on debut at Randwick in April, the daughter of super sire I Am Invincible atoned with a smart victory at the stand-alone Gosford meeting, earning herself a trip to Queensland.
Trainer Bjorn Baker’s racing manager, Luke Hilton, says she has continued to progress, and the stable is keen on her chances in today’s Bill Carter Stakes (1350m).
If she does perform to expectations, connections may even consider a seven-day turnaround into the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on May 30.
“There’s a possibility that if she could win today, we might look at backing her up in the Sires’,” Hilton said.
“But it’s a stakes race for fillies today, she’s got a very good pedigree, so it would be a good bonus.
“Obviously, we were a little bit disappointed first-up, but she just needed that, and she bounced back second-up. She has come on from that run and out to the 1350 should suit as well. She’s drawn a good gate so she should get every chance from there.”
The Bill Carter Stakes will be I Am Dirty’s first test beyond 1200m, but jockey Rachel King’s feedback that she relaxed well in the run last start has boosted the stable’s confidence she can extend in distance.
King is travelling to Brisbane for the meeting, and I Am Dirty will be among eight rides for her on the nine-race card.
The top jockey has also stuck with Probability Theory in The Roses (2000m) after steering her to victories at her past two Sydney starts, and if the filly can win it will be a notable training performance from Nacim Dilmi, who is stepping her up steeply in journey from the 1300m she was successful over at her most recent start.
