French Selections Sunday 5th

R1 Longchamp [R-H]
C1 – PRIX DE CROISSY – 2000m (a1m1/4) – TURF – Class 2 Race – Flat – EUR € 28,000

1. DUMONTEILDESAIGLES – The only maiden in the lineup and is unlikely to pose a threat in this race on the evidence of his 3 outings, the latest (7th) over 1700m at La Roche-Posay on 1 May. Can be ruled out

2. COLUMBUS – Made a winning debut on the PSF at Deauville over 1900m in November last year and didn’t go unnoticed when 3rd on his seasonal reappearance over 2000m on the turf at Chantilly on 30 March. Not taken lightly

3. LOOK DE VEGA – Impressive wide-margin winner on debut over 1800m on heavy ground at Fontainebleau on 25 November. Is highly regarded by connections and has Classic entries to his name

4. BELIEVER – Runner-up on debut over 1800m on heavy ground at Fontainebleau on 25 November. Confirmed that promise with a winning reappearance over 2150m at Cagnes on 20 January

5. HAMAVI – Dubawi gelding who showed a willing and professional attitude when winning on debut over course and distance on 18 April. Open to any amount of improvement

Summary: LOOK DE VEGA (3) could hardly have been more impressive when running out a wide-margin winner on debut last year. BELIEVER (4), who finished 2nd on that occasion, franked the form of that race by winning on his reappearance and his superior fitness should stand him in good stead. A bigger threat, however, could come from fellow first-start scorer HAMAVI (5) whose winning debut on this course is an advantage.  COLOMBUS (2) isn’t without a chance either after an encouraging comeback performance at Chantilly which would have benefitted him no end.

SELECTIONS
LOOK DE VEGA (3) – HAMAVI (5) – BELIEVER (4) – COLUMBUS (2)
C2 – PRIX GOLD RIVER – FONDS EUROPEEN DE L’ELEVAGE – 2800m (a2m) – TURF – Listed Race – Flat – EUR € 48,000

1. DSCHINGIS STAR – Finished 4th in a Listed race over track and trip last year having filled the runners-berth up in a Group III at Deauville before that. Didn’t go unnoticed on her return when 7th over 2100m on heavy ground at Saint-Cloud on 12 April

2. SALTWELL – Performed consistently last year before blotting her copybook by finishing 10th in the Group III Prix Belle de Nuit over 2800m at Saint-Cloud on 22 October. Not taken lightly on her reappearance

3. MELO MELO – High-class mare with references at the highest level, including a 2nd in the 2023 Group I Prix Vermeille. Absent since her 8th in the Group I Prix de Royallieu over track and trip on 30 September but looks well placed to win on her return

4. ANGEL GUIDANCE – Revealed promise in maiden races last year, winning in just her second start (over 2400m at Vichy) but has shown her limitations at this level – unplaced in 3 subsequent outings, the latest (9th of 9) a 3000m Listed at Saint-Cloud (1 April)

Summary: Last season’s Group I Prix Vermeille runner-up MELO MELO (3) makes her belated reappearance after an absence of more than 7 months but is head and shoulders clear of these rivals on official ratings, so is good value to make a winning comeback in this Listed event. Both SALTWELL (2), who has already proven her efficiency/competitiveness on soft ground, and DCHINGIS STAR (1), who got the better of that rival in a Deauville meeting last year, are those most likely to pick up the pieces should the selection fluff her lines.

SELECTIONS
MELO MELO (3) – SALTWELL (2) – DSCHINGIS STAR (1) – ANGEL GUIDANCE (4)
C3 – PRIX DE LA SEINE – 2200m (a1m1/2) – TURF – Listed Race – Flat – EUR € 55,000

1. SIYANDRA – Finished 2nd in both starts at Chantilly last year and showed encouraging improvement to win on her reappearance over 2400m at Saint-Cloud on 19 Apri. Has scope for further progress

2. SOME SKYE – Runner-up in both starts last year and finished 2nd again on her reappearance over 2000m at this venue on 18 April. Warrants respect, even as a maiden

3. ALAKAI – Improved with each of her 3 outings last year, which culminated in an 1800m Chantilly success in October. Caught the eye when finishing 3rd over 2100m on heavy ground at Saint-Cloud on her reappearance last month (12 April)

4. KEEN APPROACH – Consistently filly with sound references/form credentials,  which include finishing 3rd over 2000m in a Listed race at Saint-Cloud and a recent Group III 4th over 2100m at that venue on 19 April. Not taken lightly

5. GALA REAL – Progressive last-start winner who impressed on her reappearance when scoring over 2100m on heavy ground at Saint-Cloud on 12 April. Looks an exciting prospect

6. AVENTURE – Debut winner over 1600m at Chantilly last year and confirmed that promise by finishing 2nd in the 1600m Group III Prix des Reservoirs at Deauville on 18 October. Has Classic entries so has to be taken seriously on her reappearance

Summary: GALA REAL (5) was an authoritative winner on heavy ground at Saint-Cloud on her reappearance, so it could pay to follow her progress. Any rain or a rain-affected track wouldn’t hold any fears for her either. AVENTURE (6), who followed up her debut win with a creditable 2nd in the Group III Prix des Reservoirs, is an exciting prospect and isn’t incapable of fighting for victory with improvement expected on her reappearance. SOME SKYE (2), having finished 2nd in all 3 starts, is a maiden but could make her presence felt, along with last-start winner SIYANDRA (1).

SELECTIONS
GALA REAL (5) – AVENTURE (6) – SOME SKYE (2) – SIYANDRA (1)
C4 – PRIX DU PASSAGE SAINTE-ANNE – 2100m (a1m1/4) – TURF – Class 3 Divided Handicap – Flat – EUR € 30,000

1. ZELINA – Versatile filly with references on turf and PSF but she continues to blow hot and cold. Ran a better race than her finishing position (9th) suggests in a 1900m PSF handicap at Deauville on 9 April – place chance

2. ALISTO KING – Made a very encouraging reappearance (3rd) over 2000m at Fontainebleau on 13 April. Makes his Quinte+ debut with a lively outside chance

3. HERMANO – Consistent stayer with sound references/form credentials over marathon distances, including a last-start 4th over 3100m at Nantes on 6 April. His wide No 14 stall is a disadvantage

4. AL ALAALI – Opened his account in an 1800m handicap at Compiegne in March and proved his competitiveness off this mark (under a 2,5kg penalty) by finishing 5th in a 1900m PSF handicap at Deauville on 9 April. Dark horse

5. SAKARI – Won a 2100m PSF handicap at Pornichet on 14 November but has struggled since and a soft track will not serve his interests either. Could only finish 8th in a 2100m handicap at Senonnes on 14 April

6. COGNAC – Revealed promise as a two-year-old but has since flattered to deceive. Was gelded last summer but hasn’t shown signs of improvement recently – finished 10th in a 1600m handicap at this venue on 14 April

7. KAPETANIOS – Consistent for the most part and won a Lyon-La Soie PSF handicap on 24 March before finishing a creditable 6th under a 2kg penalty (current mark) in a 2000m turf handicap at Nancy on 4 April. Outsider

8. GOLDYWAY DE SAON – Consistent handicapper who would’ve needed his comeback run in a 2400m Quinte+ at Chantilly on 4 April and is likely to do better here than he did that day (14th). Keep safe

9. MELBORA – Performed at a good level last season as a three-year-old but has been relatively disappointing since resuming. Dropped in the weights/ratings as a result and is dangerous off this mark, despite finishing 14th on this course in a 1600m handicap on 14 April

10. PANGAEA – Has performed consistently/competitively in all 5 outings (conditions races) this year – confirmed as much with an encouraging 2nd over 2400m at Nantes on 18 April. Not taken lightly

11. DARK ZEL – Has regained freshness since her PSF handicap failure (11th) over 2100m at Chantilly on 1 March. Less effective on turf

12. ALVALDI – Made a winning reappearance at Morlaix in March but failed to confirm that form/improvement when only 9th on her handicap debut over 2100m at Senonnes on 14 April. Shouldn’t be hastily condemned

13. STYLE D’EMIRS – Consistent performer in conditions races on both surfaces and was the subject of a few whispers ahead of his handicap debut at Chantilly on 8 March, though could only finish 11th over 1600m on the PSF. Capable of better

14. AMERICANO – Inconsistent but is a versatile colt with references at this level on both surfaces. Best watched for now, though, after finishing a modest 7th in a 1600m conditions race at Lyon-Parilly on 17 April

15. SAANEN – Opened her account with a last-start victory over 2000m in a conditions race at Fontainebleau on 13 April. Ought to remain competitive under a 1kg penalty

16. LODOVICO – Recently joined Yoann Bonnefoy’s stable but this race will probably be used as a gauge for his new trainer. Best watched for now after finishing 9th in a 2150m conditions race on PSF at Lyon-La Soie on 15 March

Summary: MELBORA (9) performed well and kept good company as a three-year-old, so is probably a lot better than her recent form suggests. With references on this track and over this distance which isn’t likely to hold any fears, it could pay to side with her at generous odds. GOLDYWAY DE SAON (8), after a much-needed comeback outing, is capable of improving to fight for victory under Stéphane Pasquier, Both SAANEN (15), a winner last time out, and ALVALDI (12), whose handicap debut is best forgotten, are also capable of making their presence felt. STYLE D’EMIRS (13) and PANGAEA (10) complete the shortlist.

SELECTIONS
MELBORA (9) – GOLDYWAY DE SAON (8) – SAANEN (15) – ALVALDI (12)
C5 – PRIX DE SEVRES – 1850m (a1m1/8) – TURF – Maiden Race – Flat – EUR € 27,000

1. BASSETT BELLE – Didn’t have the race run to suit but stayed on encouragingly to finish an improved 4th on her reappearance at this venue over 1600m on 18 April. On that evidence, the step up to this distance should serve her interests

2. ALMALY – Very unlucky during her first steps at Chantilly (5th), she looks formidable. First chance.

3. MY DESERT QUEEN – Soundly beaten (10th) on debut at Leicester last year but has improved in two starts on French soil – finished 6th over 1800m at Fontainebleau on 13 April. More needed

4. ALYAQUT – Caught the eye on debut when staying on well to finish 5th over 1600m at Saint-Cloud on 19 April. Not one to be underestimated

5. MONBE – Confirmed the promise of her debut 5th by improving to finish 3rd over 1600m at Saint-Cloud on 1 April. Will have more to offer

6. WITH STARS – Revealed considerable promise by finishing 3rd on debut last year and would’ve come on appreciably with the benefit of a much-needed comeback outing (7th) at Chantilly over 2000m on 30 March. Keep safe

7. SPERA – Improving with every outing and confirmed as much by finishing 2nd over 2000m at Le Lion-d’Angers on 7 April. Dark horse

8. COSMIC FRONT – Clément Lecoeuvre rides this Siyouni debutante trained by Henri-François Devin. Should not be underestimated

Summary: ALMALY (2) didn’t go unnoticed on debut at Chantilly as she would probably have achieved a better finishing position had she found clear running room in the latter stages. She is obviously better than that 5th suggests and is likely to have improved with the benefit of that experience, so she could be worth siding with here ahead of BASSETT BELLE (1), who stayed on well to finish an improved 4th over a shorter distance on her reappearance and should apreciate the step up to this trip. WITH STARS (6), with full blinkers fitted for the first time, and ALYAQUT (4), who caught the eye with an encouraging debut 5th, complete the shortlist.

SELECTIONS

C6 – PRIX D’HEDOUVILLE – 2400m (a1m1/2) – TURF – Gr3 Race – Flat – EUR € 80,000

1. GOLIATH – Runner-up to GALASHIELS (4) in the Listed Prix Lord Seymour over this course and distance on his reappearance last month (14 April). Will pose a threat

2. REX OF THUNDER – Not disgraced in either outing on French soil last year, finishing 5th on both occasions – in a 2000m Group III at Deauville in August and over 2000m in a Listed race at Nancy on 17 September. Outsider

3. TRABUCO – Has looked better than ever recently by reeling off a hat-trick of Quinte+ successes, including consecutive 2000m wins at Saint-Cloud recently on heavy ground. Penalised 5kg for winning his latest on 1 April – dark horse

4. GALASHIELS – Course-and-distance winner of the Listed Prix Lord Seymour over course and distance on 14 April, when beating re-opposing rival GOLIATH (1). A progressive sort who is the one to beat

5. RASHFORD – Consistent performer who finished out of the first four for the first time in his career (10 starts) when only 5th over course and distance in the Listed Prix Lord Seymour on 14 April. Place chance

6. SHAKTI – Has revealed considerable ability by winning three of four starts, including her latest on heavy ground at Chantilly on her reappearance over 2400m on 30 March. Not taken lightly

Summary: GALASHIELS (4) was a good winner of the Listed Prix Lord Seymour over this course and distance last time, beating GOLIATH (1) by 2 lengths, and is good value to confirm his superiority in this Group III event. SHAKTI (6) has won three of four outings, including on her reappearance last time, and has already proven herself on rain-softened ground so ought to be competitive for the leading positions. TRABUCO (3) steps up in class after a hat-trick of Quinté victories but shouldn’t be underestimated either.

SELECTIONS
GALASHIELS (4) – GOLIATH (1) – SHAKTI (6) – TRABUCO (3)
C7 – SUPER HANDICAP DU PRINTEMPS – 2000m (a1m1/4) – TURF – Class 1 Handicap – Flat – EUR € 100,000

1. RUSSIPANT FAL – A model of consistency who returned to winning ways in his second comeback appearance at Lyon-La Soie on the PSF over 1800m on 6 April. Ought to remain competitive under a 1kg penalty

2. ROCK BLANC – Won back-to-back outings over 1900m on the PSF at Chantilly late last year, the latest on 22 December. Confirmed on turf and at this venue, so warrants respect on his return

4. AZKA – Consistent performer with sound references/form credentials, including a last-start 5th in an 1850m Listed race on his reappearance at this venue on 14 April. Winning chance

5. CASSIUS – Returned to form with an encouraging 3rd on his reappearance over 1900m on PSF at Chantilly on 18 March. Keep safe

6. SPLENDINO – Consistent, lightly raced colt with sound references, which include a creditable 4th and a Quinte+ victory in his 2 handicap appearances. Didn’t go unnoticed when 5th in a 2150m Listed race at Cagnes on 25 February

7. BROUILLARD – Honest veteran who showed he retains the zest for racing by winning a conditions race over 1800m at Chantilly on his reappearance last month (4 April). Has more to do here

8. SACRED SPIRIT – A model of consistency last year and returned in similar form by finishing 2nd on his reappearance over 2400m on heavy ground at Chantilly on 30 March. Not taken lightly

9. MAGELLAN – Versatile performer with sound references/form credentials on both surfaces, including a Quinte+ victory on turf two starts back and a subsequent 2nd in a 1900m Quinte+ on PSF at Deauville on 9 April. High on the shortlist

10. EVERILLO – Unreliable but is capable performer with sound references in the handicaps, including a 2400m Quinte+ victory on this course. Didn’t go unnoticed when 6th on his reappearance at Senonnes over 2100m on 14 April

11. VERITABLE – Consistent performer in conditions and claiming races. Confirmed as much by winning a 2000m conditions event on heavy ground at Toulouse on 4 March

Summary: Competitive Class 1 handicap in which a speculative vote is given to AZKA (4), who particularly enjoys ParisLongchamp and reverts to the handicaps after two creditable performances in Listed races. MAGELLAN (9), whose competitiveness at this level is undeniable, represents a formidable jockey-trainer combination and is likely to fight for victory, as is PARTENIT (3) judging by the strength and the consistency of his recent form. Last-start winner RUSSIPANT FAL (1) ought to remain competitive under top weight, while the chances of SACRED SPIRIT (8) shouldn’t be underestimated either.

C8 – PRIX DE LA BRETONNIERE – 2200m (a1m1/2) – TURF – Maiden Race – Flat – EUR € 27,000

1. ZERAFA – Revealed considerable promise on debut, finishing 3rd on this course over 2100m on 7 April – notably, ahead of VILLA CASTELLO (2) and STRASSIA (5). Keep safe

2. VILLA CASTELLO – Was the subject of ‘track talk’ ahead of her debut but only finished 6th on that occasion over 2100m at this venue on 7 April. Ought to do better with that run under the belt

3. LILLY LUX – Runner-up on debut over 1900m on PSF at Chantilly and confirmed that promise by finishing 4th over 2000m on the turf at that venue on 30 March. Dark horse

5. STRASSIA – Stayed on encouragingly to finish 5th on debut over 2100m at this venue on 7 April – behind ZERAFA (1) and VILLA CASTELLO (2). Not taken lightly

6. AQUA AUGUSTA – Didn’t go unnoticed when finishing 3rd on debut over 1900m on PSF at Deauville on 5 November. One to keep an eye on

7. LATTAQUE – Finished 8th of 12 on debut at Chantilly over 1600m on 28 March. Would have gained plenty from that experience

8. SOLITE – Regally bred filly who caught the eye when finishing an unlucky 3rd on debut at Chantilly in September last year over 1600m. Open to significant improvement on her reappearance

Summary: Well-bred Dubawi filly SOLITE (8), who is out of champion Plumania, makes her eagerly anticipated reappearance having caught the eye on debut last year and, with improvement expected on her return, it should pay to follow her progress. VILLA CASTELLO (2) didn’t perform as was probably expected in her introduction but she would only have benefitted from that experience, so can pose a threat. She did, however, finish behind ZERAFA (1) that day, which makes the dangerous to discount. STRASSIA (5) is closely matched on that form so could get into the picture too.

SELECTIONS
SOLITE (8) – VILLA CASTELLO (2) – ZERAFA (1) – STRASSIA (5)
C9 – PRIX DU PASSAGE DES PRINCES – 2100m (a1m1/4) – TURF – Class 3 Divided Handicap – Flat – EUR € 21,000

2. NO BARRIER – Yet to win a race and has struggled in handicaps but was third last time out in a Conditions race at Fontainebleau over 1800m on 2 April. Can contest the finish again

3. GUITRY – On a long losing run and was tenth last time out in a handicap at this track over 2150m on 25 April. Capable of contesting the finish

4. RECOLETA – Disappointing last run when well beaten in a handicap at Compiègne over 2400m on 10 March. Only win was at this course and could earn some money

5. LIGHT UP THE MOON – Disappointing last run when well beaten in a Conditions race at Fontainebleau over 2000m on 13 April. Others are preferred on handicap debut

6. PRINCESS KARA – Disappointing first run in a handicap when 9th at Le Mans over 2300m on 24 October. Capable of improvement but is likely to need this run returning from a break

7. KINDY BERE – Proved in need of her only run of this year when tenth in a handicap at Saint-Cloud over 2400m on 12 April. Should be fitter this time and has a place chance

8. PETIT CHOSE – Showed some improvement when fourth last time out in a handicap at Saint-Cloud over 2400m on 12 April. Can do even better this time so deserves respect

9. BELLE – Disappointing form of late and was 5th last time out in a handicap at Saint-Cloud over 2400m on 12 April. Could play a minor role

10. DANSEUSE CELEBRE – Battling to get a second win but was fourth last time out in a handicap at Deauville over 2400m on 1900m on 9 April. Should contest the finish again

11. VENICE WAY – Yet to win a race and was 12th last time out in a handicap at this course over 2800m on 28 April. More is needed to win this race

12. CELTIC JABAAR – Showed some improvement in his final start of last year when fourth in a Conditions race at Saint-Jean-de-Monts over 3100m on 20 August. Likely to need this run

Summary: NO BARRIER (2) and MISS WHITE SOCKS (1) are consistent performers who seem well on their way to making a mark in the handicaps and could find themselves fighting for victory. GUITRY (3), whose latest outing in a competitive fillies’ handicap is better than it reads, and PETIT CHOSE (8), who represents the formidable Jérôme Reynier outfit, are also candidates for success.

C10 – PRIX DE LA GRANGE AUX BELLES – 1800m (a1m1/8) – TURF – Class 3 Race – Flat – EUR € 20,000

1. SOKNA – Won a handicap over this distance at Fontainebleau in her penultimate start and proved her competitiveness off this mark (under a 2,5kg penalty) by finishing a creditable 5th in a 1600m handicap at Lyon-Parilly on 20 April

2. GRAND ANGEL – Improving filly who finished 2nd on this course over 1850m on her handicap debut on 14 April. Not taken lightly

3. COUPE D’EUROPE – Has improved to finish on the podium in both outings this year in stronger races/fields – finished 2nd over 2150m at Cagnes in January and an encouraging 3rd over 2000m at Marseille-Borely on 20 March. Winning chance

4. ES XARCU – Consistent filly with sound references/form credentials, which include finishing 3rd and 4th twice each. Didn’t go unnoticed when 4th in her first start on turf over 2100m at Toulouse on 8 April – rider’s 1,5kg allowance will help

5. RUBY IN THE ROCKS – Experienced filly with references at this level and in both handicaps and claimers. Finished 4th in a handicap over 1850m at this venue on 14 April behind GRAND ANGEL (2) – dangerous to discount with her rider’s 1,5kg allowance

Summary: COUPE D’EUROPE (3) and ES XARCU (4) are, as the joint top-rated runners in the race, ideally engaged under the conditions so should find themselves fighting for victory. Improving GRAND ANGEL (2), who was only narrowly beaten on her handicap debut on this track recently, and consistent RUBY IN THE ROCKS (5), with the benefit of her rider’s 1,5kg allowance, are also capable of posing a threat.

Summary: MACHINOS (3) could be the answer after running in Graded races in Italy he was a fair fifth at Angers last time and he can score from likely main threat CABOT CLIFFS (2) who has also been racing abroad in Germany with success on the flat and over hurdles and fences. CATS’AGILITY (7) looks like the one to pick up minor honours. GENTEEL STAR (5) heads the remainder.

C2 – GRAND STEEPLE-CHASE DE NANCY – 4200m (a2m1/2) – TURF – Class 1 Race – Steeple Chase – EUR € 54,000

Summary: ZAKY (4) has solid form of late, he won at Dieppe in August and ran well when third in a Class 2 chase and more recently fifth in a Grade 3 chase at Auteuil. He should be too smart for these. RATE (5) is a threat having faired well when second last time in mid-April over hurdles, which came after three second-placed runs over fences. GIPSY DE CHOISEL (3) looks like the one to go with from an each-way perspective. CHOUAN (2) makes up the shortlist.

6. BELHAD JELOIS – 5th at Saint-Cloud last time behind NICASTRO (2) in early April in a handicap over 2000m. On better weight terms she can be competitive

Summary: Although only a narrow winner at Saint-Cloud in early April last time NICASTRO (2) has strong claims for following up on that success despite a weight rise. His main threat could be BELHAD JELOIS (6) who was back in fifth in that race and has almost six lengths to find. WALDLADY (5) ran well when finishing second last time in late April and is one to pay attention to.

10. JACK DU BARBEY – Has been struggling for some time now and was 8th last time out in Class E over this course and distance on 7 April. Others are much preferred

11. JOCKSTRAP – Has some ability but he does also have major disqualification issues and he was disqualified last time out at Argentan on 15 April. Best watched for now

12. JALIENORTH GAME – Has major disqualification issues and was disqualified last time out at Vincennes on 2 January. Hard to trust and is best watched for now

13. JARDIN D’ERABLE – Holding his form and was fourth last time out in Class E at Vincennes over 2100m on 13 April. Capable of earning some minor money

14. JUPITER MADRIK – Unreliable and was disqualified last time out at Caen on 27 April. Did better in his penultimate start which was at this course and has has a place chance

15. JACKPOTINA – Disappointing form of late and is coming off a pair of disqualifications, with the latest being at Cordemais on 24 April. Capable of a surprise if wise

Summary: JET SOCIETY (2) has taken a step forward without her shoes and is expected to follow up with another success. Well drawn behind the car-start, JOB DU PERSIL (1) ran a solid race at Vincennes last time and has every chance on the back of this performance. JISMIE GRIFF (8) had the race wrapped up last time out when she lost her stride near the finish line and deserves another chance. JERICHO VEDAQUAIS (7) has been in good spirit of late and is sure to go well again.

1. HOT SHOT – Mostly moderate form of late and was 8th last time out in Class F at Cabourg over this distance on 18 December. Likely to need this run returning from a break

2. HEROINE RINGEAT – On a very long losing and was unplaced last time out in Class E over this track and trip on 24 March. Others are much preferred

3. GUEPARD DU PIRE – Mostly moderate form of late and was 7th last time out in Class F at this course over 2700m on 28 April. Needs to do more to win this race

4. GENIALISSIME – Disappointing recent form and was well beaten last time out in Class E at Saint-Omer over 2625m on 14 April. Capable of winning if finding best form

5. GOSSIP – On a very long losing run but is in good form and was third last time out in a Class E Mounted race at  Enghien over 2875m on 18 April. Just as good in harness races and should fight out the finish

6. GERONIMO STARDUST – Has been struggling for some time now and was tenth last time out in Class F at this course over 2700m on 28 April. Others are much preferred

7. GENTLEMAN POWER – Showed vast improvement when runner-up last time out in Class F at this course over 2700m on 28 April. Can go one better on best form

8. HERCULE DE BEA – Has not won for some time now but in good heart and was runner-up last time out in a Mounted race at Reims over 2550m on 25 April. Can go one better back in a harness race

9. HURON – Has lost his way this year and was unplaced last time out in Class F at this course over 2700m on 28 April. Capable of doing better but others are preferred

10. FOLIE DARLING – Unreliable and was 11th last time out in Class E at Reims over 2550m on 8 April. Capable of earning some minor money when in the mood

11. GRINGO SAVA – On a very long losing run but was not disgraced when 5th last time out in Class E in a Mounted race at Enghien over 2875m on 19 July. Better under the saddle and is likely to need this run

12. FAUCON DE L’ALBA – Has struggled of late and was 9th last time out in Class F at Argentan over 2875m on 15 April. Needs to find a few lengths to win this race

13. FALCON JET – Disappointing recent form and was tenth last time out in  Class E at Saint-Omer over 2625m on 14 April. Capable of making the frame barefoot this time

Summary: GOSSIP (5) ran a good race under the saddle at Enghien and could have the edge back under harness in what seems a much easier task. HERCULE DE BEA (8) is a good solid performer in both codes and warrants the utmost respect. GENTLEMAN POWER (7) showed a nice rebound of form in his most recent outing and ought to confirm. GENIALISSIME (4) clearly needed the run last time and should fare much better this time around.

1. ISEA DU QUENNE – capable but never far from faulting. Surprise 3rd of 11 in a 2200m Class F here late last month but cannot be considered a priority

2. INSTIGATEUR – 4th to IDEO JOSSELYN (8) in a Class F under these conditions a fortnight ago. Unlikely too shake things up but should still acquit himself honourably

3. IMPERATRICE LOVE – Unplaced on lone appearance here but came an encouraging 3rd of 10, on first start back, in a 2400m Amiens Class F on 19 April. Mathieu Mottier reining this time and will be expected to finish in the mix

4. IL MAGNIFICO – Useful type making first appearance since finishing 10th of 13 in a 2750m Cabourg Class E late-October. Is shod to preference and can set the cat among the pigeons if Dominik Locqueneux keeps him trotting

5. INTELLO D’ERABLE – Faulted on re-entry in a 2550m monté Class F at  Gournay-en-Bray late-March. Has had time to come on, appreciates Caen, and can win this

6. INVICTUS ORADEL – Last of 13 on re-entry in a 2900m Amiens Class F on 13 April and will not be troubling the judge

7. INDES GALANTES – Unexceptional mare that has never excelled at Caen. 11th of 16 in a 3200m Fougères Class F last Sunday and is not about to cause an upset

8. IDEO JOSSELYN – Simply superb since returning to racing barefoot, pulling off 2 course and distance wins, most recently in a Class F on 22 April, and the hat-trick is well within his capacity

9. IN YOU – Kicked the year off well but below-par since, latterly 8th of 12 in a 2650m Alençon Class F 2 weeks ago, and can be ruled out

10. IDEAL DU GOULOT – Made it 2 wins in a row when securing a 2400m Amiens Class F smartly a month back. Has yet to deliver at Caen but is barefoot this time and is hard to ignore

11. IHLUNA – 5th of 15 in a 2825m Cordemais Class D 2 weeks ago. Competitively-shod this time and is unlikely to return home empty-handed

12. IDEAL DELADOU – Looked rather ordinary when 8th, a place behind IRENO DES PLAINES (13), in a 2150m Argentan Class D 3 weeks ago and cannot expect to generate much interest

13. IRENO DES PLAINES – 7th of 14 in a 2150m Argentan Class D on 15 April and is not about to influence the result

Summary: A useful trotter in both disciplines, INTELLO D’ERABLE (5) has one race in him since the winter break, is barefoot for his return to harness competition and can have his day in the sun. François Lagadeuc will be justifiably wary of IDEAL DU GOULOT (10) who returns barefoot to Caen on a right-handed hat-trick, and IDEO JOSSELYN (8) who is herself bidding for a Caen 3-timer. IL MAGNIFICO (4) has never disappointed over 2450m here and is competitively-shod for comeback.

1. KALINE FOUR – Filly with some potential but sanctioned in a 2850m Laval Class E mid-March and others easier to back

2. KAMA D’EM – Pillar-to-post winner of a Class E under these conditions a fortnight ago. Configured similarly and must be taken seriously

3. KOCAINE BOND – Made no bones about securing a 2400m Amiens Class F on 19 April. Steps up in category though and may find this a stiff test

4. KASSIOPEE WIND – Promising sort but makes her first appearance since coming 4th of 10 in a 2700m Vincennes Class D last September. Shoes on and will be race-rusty

5. KALEA DREAM – In 3 starts, has never shown any liking for Caen, most recently sanctioned in a 2450m Class E here 2 weeks ago. Disregard

6. KATANA – Unexceptional 8th to KAMA D’EM (2) in a Class E over course and distance on 22  April and can expect to have few takers

7. KELISSA D’AVE – Runner-up to the unassailable KAI LA SHA (16) in a 2750m Class E at La Capelle on 7 April. Entrusted to Yoann Lebourgeois this time and will be afforded every chance

8. KLASSIKA DIDALO – Has turned a corner lately, coming 2nd to KAMA D’EM (2) over track and trip 2 weeks ago. Is a progressive filly and one to keep an eye on

9. KINDIA DU CHENE – Good, consistent type that came a good 2nd of 15 on re-entry in a 2350m Angers Class E on 11 April. Will have progressed and can get straight down to business. Claim

10. KANDIE DJOB – Has not been seen out since finishing 3rd of 5 in a 2875m Enghien monté Class D last October and will need the run

11. KEYPTOWN – Disappointing on the whole this term, latterly last of 10 in a 2700m Vincennes Class E mid-April and appears to have very limited prospects

12. KIARA DES BORDES – Modest individual that could manage no closer than 7th behind KAPUCINE ZEN (13) in a 2700m Vincennes Class E on 16 April and will pose no danger

13. KAPUCINE ZEN – Won 2 on the trot before coming 4th of 10 finishers in a 2700m Vincennes Class E on 16 April and is in with a realistic chance of making the frame

14. KALIE PRIMO – Tenacious Class E course-and-distance winner mid-March before being sanctioned in a 2700m Vincennes Class E a month later. Returns to racing right-handed and can play a key role

15. KINSHASA DE CHENU – Last of 12 in a 2700m Vincennes Class D late last month. Is no star but is well-engaged, and racing barefoot will do her prospects no harm

16. KAI LA SHA – Comfortable winner of a 2750m Class E at La Capelle on 7 April. Is confirmed at Caen, has an entry made-in-heaven, and is not incapable of doubling her money

Summary: Put away for the winter after being sanctioned here last October, KINDIA DU CHENE (9) left a very good impression on her seasonal bow at Angers recently and can bring home the bacon this time. She will still come under pressure from the well-entered KAI LA SHA (16) who opened her 2024 account on her own re-entry a month ago, and KAPUCINE ZEN (13) who is like a horse reborn since starting to race barefoot. KALIE PRIMO (14) won over course and distance before faulting at Vincennes and, with application, can again go close.

1. KIRWAN THORIS – Respectable 5th to KENZO DU MONT (6) in a 2200m Class E here late last month and can expect to have his work cut out this time

2. KERU DE LOU – Unbeaten in 3 last season. 6th to KOALA DES ARCS (16) on re-entry though, in a 2850m Laval Class E mid-March, and may be a race shy

3. KNOCK OUT MAKER – Remarkable early last season but has not raced since faulting in a 2100m Vincennes Class D mid-January. Here for reasons of conditioning and can be passed over

4. KINGMAN DELO – Mixes the good with the less good but came a decent 3rd of 10 finishers in a Class E over 2200m here 8 days ago, and returns with morale intact and a realistic chance

5. KAID DEL GREEN – Faithful for the most part but sent for a break after being sanctioned in a 2700m Vincennes Class D on Boxing Day. Hind shoes off for return to competition but other still preferred

6. KENZO DU MONT – Reliability not his strong suit and latterly caused a 20/1 upset by winning a 2200m Class E here 8 days ago. Unlikely to repeat but can still get in on the action

7. KAMARAN MADRIK – Tricky but capable colt making his first appearance since coming 6th of 12 in a 2700m Vincennes Class D early-November. Hind shoes off for first time though and will be worth monitoring

8. KAISER LATAL – Has merit and is confirmed racing clockwise, but will need to improve on his 6th of 10 in a 2100m Vincennes Class D on 12 April

9. KAMARI LOVE – Lightly-raced, and unbeaten colt, starting for the first time since winning a 2150m Enghien Class D last August. Competitively-shod for re-entry and looks the horse to beat

10. KOKIN DE BELLANDE – Imposed at Nancy late-March before finishing last but one in a 2700m Vincennes Class E on 19 April, and can expect to have few friends

11. KING GATE – Races barefoot for the first time, with Yoann Lebourgeois reining, after coming 10th of 12 in a 2875m Meslay-du-Maine Class E on 19 March. Has had time to get his house in order and is not to be overlooked

12. KING BLACK DANOVER – Unplaced here late-March before trotting 7th of 8 in a 2850m Class E at Maure-de-Bretagne last Tuesday, and others preferred

13. KELLOU DES BRUMES – Sanctioned after having trouble turning in a 2100m Vincennes Class D on 12 April. Left a good impression here on penultimate outing and can set the record straight

14. KHEOPS JENILAT – Showed potential last season but out of the picture in both this term, latterly 10th of 14 in a 2850m Mauquenchy Class E, and can be ruled out

15. KEL DIABLO ERGEE – 4th over 2200m here before winning a 2150m Argentan Class E on 28 March. Benefits from a good entry and will be competitive for a cheque

16. KOALA DES ARCS – Opened his account mid-March in a 2850m Laval Class E when unshod-in-front for the first time. Similar configuration here and will have a lot to offer if he takes to the Caen profile

Summary: An excellent future prospect, KAMARI LOVE (9) has not have been seen out since securing the double at Enghien last August; she is untried racing clockwise but is unshod-behind for comeback and has the class to make this his own. Principal opposition will hail from the wonderfully-engaged KOALA DES ARCS (16) who imposed in good order at Laval last time out, and KINGMAN DELO (4) who has taken a particular liking to Caen conditions. KELLOU DES BRUMES (13) would have finished 2nd here in March had he not been disqualified for interference, but can make amends if François Lagadeuc keeps him out of trouble.

1. ICARE DU POMMEREUX – Unremarkable 6th of 16 in a 2800m Rambouillet Class G 2 weeks ago but won last time in this configuration and must be respected

2. IVOIRE DU CEDRE – Won over course and distance last November and repeated in a Class E here 2 weeks ago. Shod as he was that day and can continue his Caen love-affair

3. HISTOIRE DE LOISIR – Tricky mare but has respectable monté credentials. Won at Angers before coming a flattering 3rd of 4 in a 2550m Reims Class F late last month. Is better than that though and will be expected to put on a more competitive show

4. ILLUSIVE GLORY – Put in quite the finish to come 3rd in a 2850m Laval Class F 10 days ago and has every chance of turning the tables on HOMMAGE LUDOIS (5)

5. HOMMAGE LUDOIS – Missed out by little on victory in a 2850m Laval Class F on 25 April, beating ILLUSIVE GLORY (4) in the process. Goes barefoot again and will be expected to finish on the podium

6. HECTOR DES BUTTES – 6th of 12 in a 2100m Vincennes amateurs harness Class F. Has decent monté references but in this field will struggle to make his mark

7. HALIZEE DES ISLES – Debuts under the saddle after coming 6th of 14 in a 2850m Loudéac Class H 8 days ago and has no realistic chance

8. IROKO DU LOIR – Honest trotter that was by no means disgraced when 5th of 11 in a Class F over course and distance on 21 March. Unraced since and will need to find more

Summary: Facile winner over course and distance on just his second start back, IVOIRE DU CEDRE (2) had previously shown a liking for these conditions and will take all the beating. ILLUSIVE GLORY (4) trotted 3rd here late-March, and barefoot again, can turn the tables on HOMMAGE LUDOIS (5) who had her measure at Laval ten days ago.

1. JIVRY – Sanctioned in a 2250m Enghien monté Class D on Thursday and backs up with limited aspirations

2. JABADAO – No longer the horse he once was, latterly 9th of 11 in a 2875m Enghien claimer, and will have few friends

3. JAFAR DE FAEL – Not easy to knock when unshod and focused. Good 2nd in a Classe E under these conditions late last month but in this company, will be facing a stiffer test

4. JASMIN DHELPA – 5th of 9 finishers in a 2650m Bordeaux Class E last Monday. Has never managed to finish a race when barefoot and cannot be considered a contender

5. JEUNE AMI – Clearly back at the top of his game since the spell, most recently 4th behind JASMIN PHIL (15) in a 2875m Enghien Class D a fortnight back. Théo Duvaldestin reining this time and will not be far from the action

6. JUVAMINE RENARDIER – Sprang a 75/1 surprise when 3rd, a place behind JAFAR DE FAEL (3), in a Class E over course and distance late last month, but a repeat seems improbable

7. JAGUAR D’OBRET – Sent for a spell after finishing 10th of 14 in a 2150m Enghien Class D on 8 March. Shoes on for comeback and will have little to offer

8. JOUR D’ERABLE – Can prove a handful but has buckets of ability. Untroubled winner of a 2725m Lisieux Class E on 20 March and, with application, can repeat

9. JASONIA DANICA – Has ability but appears to have come off the boil, most recently faulting in a 2850m Vincennes Class D on 23 April, and others easier to back

10. JADE DE DAIDOU – Mare of considerable ability but has not been seen out since coming 7th of 10 in a 2875m Enghien Class C last July, and will need the run

11. JEAGLE DREAM – 10th of 13 in a 2875m Argentan Class E 3 weeks ago, continuing his poor form. Modified shoeing but still not an obvious choice

12. JOKER D’OCCAGNES – Seldom fails to deliver when barefoot and focused. 3rd when still being conditioned, in a 2800m Strasbourg Class E early-April, and racing barefoot this time will be a serious proposition

13. JO DIBAH – Quality element but sanctioned in last 2, most recently in a 2625m Cherbourg Class E on 1 April, but on better behaviour can play an important role

14. JERICHO – Serious sort that would have made the frame in a 2100m CVincennes Class D on 12 April had Eric Raffin kept his trotting. Franck Nivard takes over and can win this if his charge stays focused

15. JASMIN PHIL – Good 3rd of 11 in a 2875m Enghien Class D on 20 April. Unlikely to get his nose in front but can still make the first 5

16. JACOMO DES BOTS – Placed 3rd over track and trip before coming 8th of 12 in a 2700m Vincennes Class D a month ago and, while not a priority, will appreciate the return to racing clockwise

Summary: Winner of two of his last three, last time going right-handed, JOUR D’ERABLE (8) will be reined by Yoann Lebourgeois for the occasion and is expected to confirm. JERICHO (14) would have finished 3rd in Paris last time had he stayed in stride, his form is sure, and will be dangerous if Franck Nivard keeps him trotting. JOKER D’OCCAGNES (12) has taken no time showing his condition and, barefoot this time, can again finish close. JO DIBAH (13) has nothing to prove in this category and will figure prominently if he can stay focused.

1. KAPORAL CARISAIE – Quickly sanctioned, when well-supported, on monté debut 2 weeks ago in a 2450m Class F here. Mottier has deserted him for the favourite and chances limited

2. KARLA QUEEN – Disappointing this year and latest 2500m harness Class H Bihorel-lès-Rouen sanction does nothing to inspire confidence

3. KENNEN JIEL – Sanctioned in a 2500m Reims harness Class F 10 days ago and is unlikely to shake things up

4. KASH GAGOU – 2nd of 10 in a 2800m Rambouillet Class F a month back. Yet to show any exceptional aptitude for the ridden game and, even with hind shoes off, can be passed over

5. KIARA D’ECOTAY – 10th of 16 in a Class E harness freshener here on 22 April. Imposed at Reims on penultimate start and must be afforded respect

6. KENTUCKY SAM – Modest trotter with what appears to be limited scope in both codes. 7th of 10 finishers in a 2200m harness Class E here late last month and can be confidently passed over

7. KENYAN BLUES – Well-backed but sanctioned on comeback 8 days ago in a 2200m harness Class E here but can play a leading role if François Lagadeuc assures his initial strides

8. KEOPS LUDOIS – Made short work of the opposition in a 2625m Class E at Agen-Le Passage 2 weeks ago. Steps up in category but should nevertheless hold his own

9. KINA DU RIB – Lacklustre last of 7 in a 2875m Enghien Class D 2 weeks ago. Has merit but is shod this time though, and risks needing the outing

10. KLEMPERER – Showed early promise but has failed to come good, most recently last of 14 in a 2850m Laval harness Class E on 25 April, and even racing barefoot has no realistic chance

11. KING OF JIEL – Useful sort that clearly needed the run when last of 5 on comeback in a 2550m Reims Class F a month back. Will have come for the race and will be worth monitoring in his new configuration

12. KALMIA DES NOES – 2nd only to a good filly in a Class E over course and distance on 18 April. Races barefoot this time and  must be considered a decent first-5 chance

13. KATANGO – Sanctioned early in a 2875m Enghien Class D on 18 April. Is no slouch on a good day and even though barefoot, may be biting off more than he can chew

14. KAP ORNE – Tricky at the best of times but held on for victory in a Class E over track and trip on 21 March and has a reasonable chance of doubling his money

15. KRONOS – Sent for a holiday after winning under the saddle late-July. 9th of 13 on re-entry in a 2450m harness Class E here and, barefoot for the first time, will take all the beating

Summary: Nicely-engaged at the limit of earnings, the promising KRONOS (15) has a harness freshener under his belt following the layoff, is barefoot for his first objective of the new season, and can keep his unbeaten monté record intact. The tricky KAP ORNE (14) imposed over course and distance on 21 March, has had time to recuperate, and is not out of the running for the double. Third to him on his lone appearance under the saddle, KENYAN BLUES (7) races barefoot for the occasion and will be no pushover. KIARA D’ECOTAY (5) opened her monté account with ease last time under the saddle and barefoot again, will be no shrinking violet if applied.

1. LORD LIGNERIES – Looked ordinary in last year’s qualification and sanctioned on debut, late-April, in a 2625m Class E at Châtelaillon-La Rochelle. No threat

2. LOZZI NONANTAIS – Well-supported when sanctioned on debut 3 weeks ago in a 2725m Lisieux Class F. In significantly better company this time and chances slim

3. LUGANO – Sanctioned in both starts to date, most recently a 2625m Cherbourg Class F last weekend. Yoann Lebourgeois reining this time which may be just the ticket to his redemption

4. LETS GO UP – Faulted early, on comeback, in a Class E over course and distance 8 days ago and can be ruled out

5. LOUSTIC DELAURIERE – Unremarkable colt that was sanctioned in a 2900m Challans Class F on Monday and can expect to remain friendless in the markets

6. LUXE D’ERABLE – Sanctioned mid-April in a 2800m Argentan Class E but can redeem himself if able to replicate his Vire performance. Chance

7. LABEL GEMA – Solid in all 3 starts so far, most recently 4th of 12 in a 2500m Reims Class E, and while not a priority, will still have his supporters

8. LOVE DANCER – Useful colt that was quickly sanctioned in a 2350m Angers Class D on 11 April. Is confirmed here and will not be far from the action if his driver assures his initial strides

9. LOTUS DE BEYLEV – Unraced since coming 5th of 6 in a 2750m Cabourg Class D late-December. Sports 4 pads for the first time though and should give a competitive account of himself

10. LOOPING MIL – Got off the mark in a 2750m Ecommoy Class F on 31 March. Comes here fresh but takes on a tougher bunch this time around

11. L’ATOLL – Gave a good account on debut before going on to win a 2575m Agen-Le Passage Class F 2 weeks ago and while unlikely to repeat, should still be able to make the first 5

12. L’ARC – Well-engaged colt with a promising future. Tenacious winner of a 2400m Amiens Class F on 19 April and is in with a realistic chance of repeating

Summary: Clément Thomain has another interesting prospect here with the delicate LUXE D’ERABLE (6) who was highly-impressive at Vire in late-March. Fitted with hind pads for the first time, he should be good enough to win a race of this nature. He is nevertheless forced to face off with the progressive L’ARC (12) who gave us a taste of his class at Amiens last month. Yet to finish a race unscathed, LUGANO (3) nonetheless possesses a wealth of untapped potential and, with application, could yet best his stablemate. LOVE DANCER (8) should not be too hastily-judged for his recent sanction and can make amends if James Lebouteiller gets him off on the right foot.

3. LEROCKY DES APRES – Qualified in 1’17″4 under the saddle at Meslay-du-Maine on 16 April and if as good in competition, will have his chances

4. LOVER STRYCK – Untried colt that qualified decently last autumn despite faulting. Debuts with a top jockey onboard and is not incapable of imposing at the first time of asking

5. LOTI SOLO – 3 starts and yet to finish a race unsanctioned, most recently on Wednesday in a 2625m Class F at Châtelaillon-La Rochelle, and can be disregarded

6. LUIGI D’ISIGNY – Sanctioned in both to date, latterly a 2200m Vincennes Class D on New Year’s Day. Front pads on but others still preferred

7. LOOK DE LA COTE – Never-threatening 8th behind LOUXOR DE JOUB (8) in a Class E over track and trip on 22 April. Has a lot going for him this time though and looks eminently capable of upsetting the apple-cart

8. LOUXOR DE JOUB – Trotted 3rd at Saint-Malo before repeating in a Class E under these conditions 2 weeks ago, and once again looks a solid place prospect

9. LEOPOLD DU CLOS – 7th on debut here before winning a 2750m Ecommoy Class E on 31 March and, with front pads fitted, can make it 2 on the trot

10. LEE D’IRAI – Has not raced since coming a flattering 3rd of 4, on monté debut, in a 2200m Vincennes Class D mid-February. 4 pads fitted this time and should be able to pick up some crumbs

Summary: Winner on turf last time out, beating a horse who subsequently went on to run well at Vincennes, LEOPOLD DU CLOS (9) is fitted with front pads for the first time and can confirm. Jean-Yann Ricart will still be keeping a keen eye on promising debutant, LOVER STRYCK (4), who will be ridden by François Lagadeuc. LOUXOR DE JOUB (8) produced a solid effort here late last month and can again make the frame. Although yet to impress, LOOK DE LA COTE (7) sports 4 pads for the occasion, with Mathieu Mottier in the irons, and is not to be underestimated.
