Fine Form
Eydon SO – 6.30
is fancied to avenge last month’s loss to Champagne Prince when they meet again in the BetUK Winter Derby Trial Conditions Stakes at Southwell.
Champagne Prince was allowed to control proceedings in their Kempton Wild Flower clash, setting a steady pace and then getting first run on the rest of the field when kicking for home two furlongs out.
It took Eydon too long to respond, but he did keep on well to close the gap to three-quarters of a length at the line.
Forewarned is forearmed and Andrew Balding will no doubt give instructions for his six-year-old to be ready to cover any similar move and, on 2lb better terms, the former 2000 Guineas fourth is taken to come out on top this time.
Balding will also be hoping to hit the target with
Marchogion SO – 5.30
in the £30 In Free Bets With BetUK Novice Stakes.
The son of Mehmas disappointed on his three-year-old debut at Newcastle, but that was a race where Motawahij went off too fast and those that chased him also paid the price.
Marchogion had some nice form as a juvenile, finishing fourth in a red-hot Leicester contest before being runner-up to a couple of decent types at Chester and Lingfield, so he is worth sticking with.
Robusto SO – 6.00
looked refreshed after a four-month lay-off when going down by just a neck at Kempton recently and can go one better in the Gamble Responsibly At BetUK Handicap.
Hierarchy NC – 3.28
will be seeking compensation in Newcastle’s BetUK: It’s Where The UK Bets Handicap after being disqualified at Lingfield last week.
Jamie Osborne’s charge weighed in light, but the manner in which he pulled clear of well-fancied rivals Whenthedealinsdone and Tyger Bay suggested he may have won anyway.
Billy Loughnane has a strong book of rides at Gosforth Park, including
Target Man NC – 3.58
in the Best Odds Guaranteed At BetMGM Maiden Stakes.
George Boughey’s Amo Racing-owned gelding has been second three times from five outings and stepping up in trip could do the trick.
Over the jumps at Lingfield,
Pierrot Jaguen LI – 1.15
offers plenty of appeal in the Download The At The Races App Maiden Hurdle.
This well-bred son of Saint Des Saints changed hands for €130,000 as a three-year-old and then fetched £200,000 last March after scoring by six lengths in an Irish point-to-point.
On his debut under rules, he attracted support against smart mare Diva Luna at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day and seems sure to come on for a staying-on third, with Festival entries in the Turners and Albert Bartlett novice hurdles still in place.
Following a couple of falls,
Disco Davis LI – 2.15
enjoyed a confidence-boosting clear round when fifth in an ultra-competitive Exeter contest in early December and has been given time to receive more schooling since.
A point-to-point winner with some solid form in bumpers also on his CV, Dan Skelton’s six-year-old is expected to come good at some point.
Course winner
Passing Well LI – 2.45
heads into the Surrey National Handicap Chase in solid form.
