So Logical looks so obvious to go one better in the six-runner Maiden Fillies’ Stakes over seven furlongs of Newcastle Tapeta tonight but it’s often worth undertaking a second glance, after all serious punting is all about yielding profit and not making mistakes; you can’t ‘buy money’ at the expense of bookmakers otherwise they would be selling it in the High Street, an observation once made by the legendary trainer/punter Barry Hills who allegedly took the betting ring for fortunes during a fabulous career which stretched from 1969 to 2011!
‘Big-hitters’ love to plough in on ‘shorties’ and, not surprisingly, bookies are always willing to accomodate them; So Logical, rated 77, will doubtless be nigh unbackable under Benoit de la Sayette, one of John Gosden’s stable jockeys but it’s best to be certain and sure enough thrice-raced, Kevin Ryan-trained
Sovereign Queen NC – 8.00
might just be the ‘fly in the ointment’ as we say.
With a BHA mark of 69 and absent for 204 days Sovereign Queen will not indeed be obvious but Ryan’s yard has been on fire and ‘Big John’ has admitted his horses seem to be ‘low key’ at present; there is also a Charlie Johnston newcomer Spook to consider!
The racing family Johnston has never been concerned with form analysis, Mark told me decades ago he runs horses ‘when they come right’ and the policy has been ultra successful for the qualified Middleham-based veterinary surgeon, more than FIVE-THOUSAND WINNERS making him the ‘winningmost trainer of all all time!’
Form analysis is both subjective and fascinating and with a need to get it right I’ve plumped each-way for Sovereign Queen, a Ten Sovereigns’ filly which should also pay to follow off what looks a gift mark.
None of the other seven handicaps make any appeal but there is a 14-runner ‘Bumper# over two miles of ‘soft’ Perth which looks well within compass of once-raced Nicky Richards’
Young Getaway PE – 5.00
again mount of Sean Quinlan.
They finished a creditable fifth four months ago when beaten only seven lengths in a strongly-run NH Flat Race at Musselburgh where the Getaway gelding was significantly backed to 7/2; a wind operation has been carried out since!
Another solid each-way proposition is
Tommys Law PE – 2.40
against a hot Willie Mullins favourite Stoke The Fire in the eight-runner Novices’ Hurdle over two miles; should be most interesting!
