Ground conditions are likely to be key to the participation of Spycatcher in the Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock on Saturday.
The Highclere Thoroughbred Racing-owned gelding is one three possible runners in the Group One contest for trainer Karl Burke alongside Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes and July Cup runner-up Swingalong and the exciting three-year-old Elite Status.
Spycatcher opened his account for the campaign when landing a Group Three prize at Deauville last month, but Highclere’s managing director Harry Herbert admits he will need cut in the ground on Merseyside if he is to line up this weekend.
“He’s in terrific form. He loves soft ground, which is very much key to him,” said Herbert.
“The ground is looking right for him at the moment and while he’s so well and in such great shape, very lightly raced this season because of the ground, we’re likely to run.
“We just cannot run him on anything other than good to soft or soft ground and talking to Karl this morning you’d definitely be looking to confirm him. And the way the weather’s looking, there’s a bit more rain forecast so we’ll see and it’s down to Karl at the end of the day, but I’d say quite likely.”
